Many people return to Husk Homestead year after year, and some share with us their favorite things about the antique log cabin, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the whole Husk experience. We hope to hear about your vacation highlights soon.

"Christmas exceeded my own expectations! They are all asking about returning next Christmas." ~ Kristy

"It is so beautiful here and the ghosts of [Husk's] history are warm and inviting – beckoning us to explore...these mountains." ~ Becky and Carole

"Beautiful, quiet, peaceful, fun, inviting and comfortable – what a great place for a weekend getaway! We only live an hour from here, but I felt we were hundreds of miles away. The flowers are blooming and are absolutely breathtaking. Saturday we awoke to bluegrass music from the Lansing Fire Department Festival and enjoyed 'front row seat entertainment' all day from the hammock and rocking chair. Our pups loved the yard! We feel as if we know you as friends from the warmth of your cabin." ~ Dena and Ed

"What a wonderful place to spend time together... relax. The wood stove was warm and toasty and we loved the front porch – so did our dog!" ~ The Risters

"Our family had a wonderful time! We got lucky and it snowed three to four inches. Our kids had so much fun sledding." ~ The Kirkmans

"We enjoyed the space in place and time. We also enjoyed your selection of books to which we recommend to future visitors, and the Fourth of July fireworks display provided by the neighbors, which we viewed from the hammock." ~ Beth and Steve

"We really enjoyed our two night stay in your cabin and loved the rustic but very comfortable atmosphere. I want to come back in the summer to see your garden." ~ Joy, Rudy, Greg, April and three week-old baby Grayson

"We loved spending time in your cabin. Your landscaping looks just wonderful ~ such lovely flowers. We felt right at home here." ~ Jill and Kristin

"Anniversary weekend! Friends are camping a few miles up the road but we needed a place to stay close by because I have a casted broken leg. Wow – we found the perfect spot! We will be back – this is a great cabin." ~ Martha and Brian

Carolyn
It sounds like a picture perfect moment – and it was – but there wasn't a photographer present to capture it. Maybe some moments are so special because they are fleeting. Either way, the magic of the mountains certainly played a part in Carolyn May's vacation experience at Husk Homestead.
"I was relaxing in the hammock, lying back with my eyes closed, when I started to hear this noise," Carolyn said. "I opened my eyes and a beautiful hummingbird was hovering right above me. You know the sound that their wings make? That was what I heard."
Carolyn spotted several other birds while vacationing at Husk with her husband, including cardinals and chickadees. Her husband saw two deer, which had apparently hopped over the fence near the house, as well as a few rabbits.
"The area around the house is very rural, but the house is full of modern conveniences," she said. "The kitchen is really up-to-date and the house is comfortable; not rustic, but nicely decorated."
With so many nearby towns to visit, Carolyn and her husband set out on many adventures during their week long escape in the mountains. They visited Jefferson, West Jefferson, and then Boone, a larger town home to Appalachia State University, before making a longer journey to Asheville.
Cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway was enjoyable, she said, not only for the scenery but also to experience local art in an old home turned craft house packed with Appalachian artists' creations. The couple also hiked along Mount Jefferson, noted for its gorgeous views.
Carolyn admits that for all of their exploring, her favorite thing to do at Husk is just relax in the shade of the wrap-around front porch.
"This is the perfect escape for families, couples or small groups of friends that just want to get away," Carolyn said. "You're not cut off completely, but you're definitely not at the beck and call of the world."
